About:

Mathias Brask-Nilsen Malm is a Norwegian-born designer whose work combines his interests in technology, biology and craft. It explores an imposing and expressionistic approach to modern design and art, often using algorithmic technology and modern production methods seamlessly blended with his crafting expertise. His aesthetic pays homage to the mathematical representation nature has had in art and ornamentation throughout history, in which the growth principles he uses are based on the same as in the natural world. With its unpredictable forms and asymmetry his sculptural work wants to reflect on the unpleasant sides nature often represents to many as both strange and threatening. While growing up close  to the mountains and fjords of Norway, Malm always felt connected to the outdoors as an escape from the concrete foundations of city life, where the topology of nature faces an issue to the modern man, even though we like to pretend otherwise. Instead of the prospect of cooperation, we aim for subjugation. With this in mind he wants his work to reflect exactly this; how much does human exceptionalism matter in a world that's gradually being exhausted by our present?
